Food Industry

The food industry plays an increasingly important role in the population’s food choices and habits. This industry is essential for the availability of healthier alternatives and for the integration of national strategies for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

The food industry is one of the main stakeholders in the provision of foods and the creation of healthy environments, as it influences the definition of the food product, its nutritional composition, its flavor, availability and marketing strategy. Hence the great responsibility of the various market stakeholders and the need for a strong commitment so that the provision of food products meets consumer needs.

More and more consumers expect the industry to provide healthy food products, that are environmentally friendly, provide clear nutritional information and respect the social rights of the people working in the production chain.

PNPAS and the food industry commitment:

PNPAS, along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Commission (EC) recommendations, believes that the food industry should increase the availability of:

  • Low salt foods
  • Low or no saturated fats foods
  • Low sugar foods

It also believes that the food industry should be able to provide adequate information for healthier food choices and that the majority of the available foods should have high nutritional value and low energy density, i.e. offering nutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc.) together with a low energy value, whenever possible, and avoiding low nutritional value products even if associated with a low energy value.
