It is agreed that childhood obesity has reached critical levels in the Algarve region. This has led the Algarve’s Regional Health Administration to develop this programme, based on multidisciplinary and multi-institutional teamwork, involving 24 local and regional partners, which is an asset in a politico-social point of view.
This programme promotes the two lifestyles changes that have the biggest impact on weight control – healthy eating and regular physical activity – as to counteract the increase in overweight and obesity levels in this region.
It is a community programme, therefore, it targets families – mainly in schools and primary health care – with the involvement of local and regional institutions.
